Content Description

Ten letters from Private George Dwight “Dite” Storrs to his mother, Mrs. R. B. Gillette, while stationed in Europe during World War I. Storrs describes conditions that he endured while stationed in Europe, townspeople that he encountered, and general conditions of an enlisted man. Three letters from Ray Gillette on Gillette Rubber Company stationary addressing topics of weather, health, and personal finances early in 1930. Miscellaneous documents include an unidentified photograph of nurses with servicemen, a certificate issued to Jeannette Isabella Gillette for services rendered to the Great War, a bill for “Hard Earned Wages,” and a brief biography of Raymond Gillette. The papers in folder 1 have been digitized.

Biographical/Historical Note

Eau Claire native George D. “Dite” Storrs enlisted in November 1917 as an Army private and was stationed in France and Luxembourg during World War I.

Raymond B. Gillette was not only George Storrs’s stepfather, but was also the founder, the first vice president and general manager of the Gillette Safety Tire Co., the forerunner of Uniroyal, Inc.
