Biographical/Historical Note

The Chancellor, known as the President prior to 1972, is the chief administrative official at the University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire. During the administration of Harvey Schofield (1916-1940), the President was intimately involved in almost all aspects of campus administration and life. William R. Davies began the slow decentralization of control with the appointment of faculty committees and a Dean of Instruction. During the Davies administration and early Haas administration, the duties of the Office of the President gradually required less involvement in the day-to-day operation of the campus and more involvement in administering a rapidly expanding institution. By the time Leonard Haas became President in 1960, the campus was embarking on an era of rapid growth resulting in the development of schools of liberal arts, business, and nursing, in addition to the traditional School of Education. The office name was changed to the Office of the Chancellor in 1972 when the State University System merged with the University of Wisconsin.
