Biographical/Historical Note
The Hoff Family (of Eau Claire, Wisconsin) Correspondence includes material from the family’s time in the World Wars. In 1917, Edwin Peterson (Karen Gustafson’s maternal uncle) enlisted in World War I. He fought until August 3, 1918, where he died during battle.
Gustafson’s paternal uncle, Olaf Hoff, enlisted on July 29, 1917. After his service, Hoff was active in the American Legion and contributed his time and money to local organizations like Junior Legion Baseball, the Eau Claire Bears, the Eau Claire Braves, and the Flying Eagles Ski Club. Hoff also owned the Hoff Produce Company for more than 15 years. Olaf Hoff’s correspondence are between him and his siblings during his first year of service. The bulk of his letters are to his brother Harry, also Gustafson’s father.
On April 9, 1941, Gustafson’s uncle Glenn Sauer enlisted in the Army for World War II until he was honorably discharged on June 13, 1945. The majority of the collection consists of Sauer’s letters to his nephew Warren from 1941-1945.
