Speeches of Chancellor Emily Hannah, 1981-1984
Content Description
Speeches prepared by Chancellor Emily Hannah at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire from January 1, 1981, to June 1, 1984, the first woman to head a UW-System institution. A preface to the collection states that “Within these pages appear the texts of some of the speeches presented by Chancellor Mary Emily Hannah, between January 1, 1981 and June 1, 1984. They appear as prepared for delivery, rather than as transcripts of the record, reflecting a speech professor’s preference for oral style over polished composition. Other records of Chancellor Hannah’s thoughts and remarks exist, of course, in the minutes of the Faculty and Student Senates and of the University Foundation and Alumni Association, and in various University publications.”

Biographical/Historical Note
Emily Hannah was the fourth chancellor of the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire and served from 1981 to 1984. Hannah was the first woman to head a UW-System institution and was the first UW-Eau Claire chancellor to not have a background in public school administration. During her tenure, Hannah was responsible for several important initiatives. She encouraged greater faculty engagement with research and scholarship. Following the recommendations of a task force headed by Chancellor Emeritus Leonard Haas, she promoted international education through more study-abroad programs and increased the numbers of international exchange students attending UW-Eau Claire. She greatly enlarged and strengthened the university's Honors Program, and she was an advocate for a greater presence of women on the faculty and women's issues in the curriculum.
