Biographical/Historical Note
George Myron King was born in 1914 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and moved to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, in the mid-1930s. George grew up playing violin and piano and performed with Eau Claire area bands such as the Jack Pingel Sr. band, and the Biggest Little Band. In 1939, George led the house band at Buck and Otto’s Supper Club, later Scott’s Steak House, and then the location of Dragonetti’s Ristorante. He met Jack O’Farrell who played saxophone and clarinet, and Bob Giese who played piano, and they formed the George King Trio. They performed popular Big Band music of the era. They became the house band for Buck and Otto’s until World War II, when all three went into service. In 1941, Anita Berg (later Neuheisel), a waitress at a local café, joined the group as a vocalist. The group became known as The George King Trio and Anita. The group played area night clubs and supper clubs, and toured Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. During the war, Anita performed for the troops at Fort McCoy. After World War II, the group reunited at Buck and Otto’s, then known as Scott’s Steak House. The restaurant was lost in a fire, along with many of the group’s instruments. The group performed together into the early 1950s. Jerry Hable became the piano player after Bob Giese passed away. Anita also performed at the Hotel Eau Claire and on Eau Claire Radio shows during the 1950s. The members continued to perform together and as a part of other groups until the 1980s.
