Biographical/Historical Note

In 1909, the first land deed was made for the location of a new school in Eau Claire. The completion of the “Old Main” (now Schofield Hall) building in 1915 marked the beginning of Eau Claire State Normal School. Through the decades, expansions required more land acquisition. Very little expansion occurred in the University’s first decades until 1951 when chancellor Leonard Haas introduced a liberal arts program that caused enrollment to increase dramatically in the next twenty years. The scale and appearance of the University changed greatly as a building boom exploded over the next two decades. The school gained university status in 1964 and became Wisconsin State University – Eau Claire; in 1971 it became University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire. From the 1970s through the present time, very few land expansions took place. Deeds, quit claims, easements, and associated correspondence in this collection document the land expansions of the University.
