Biographical/Historical Note

Records pertaining to Honors Week, an annual celebration of students achieving outstanding academic performance. Academic honor societies hold events, activities, and give out awards to members. A banquet at the end of the week honors student achievements and provides “Outstanding Senior” awards. During the 1970s, Assistant Chancellor Ormsby Harry thought that students’ academic excellence should be celebrated during the spring semester before they graduated, and not just celebrated on commencement day. Harry involved the academic honor societies in organizing Honors Week. “He worked closely with foreign languages professor Roma Hoff, advisor to Sigma Delta Phi, the Spanish honor society. For the first such event, in 1973, five academic honor societies were led by Phi Kappa Phi, presenting a week’s worth of events capped with a Saturday evening banquet and an address by Circuit Court Judge Thomas Barland. The next year, eight academic societies joined in the event, and by 1977 seventeen honor societies took part.” (Building Excellence: University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire 1916-2016, p. 177)
