He worked at the U.S. Rubber Company plant for 15 years and served as president of Local 19 of the United Rubber Workers for seven years. He spent two years organizing consumer cooperatives for the International Union of Rubber Workers, and later worked as a fieldman for the Eau Claire Consumers Cooperative.
