John Hildebrand Papers, 1979-2019
Content Description
The papers of John Hildebrand, writer and professor emeritus of English at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, is organized into six series. Four of the series correspond to the major publications of John Hildebrand. Of the remaining two, one relates to Hildebrand’s articles, and the last contains awards and biographical materials. Series one, Reading the River, includes ten manuscripts of Reading the River: A Voyage Down the Yukon, as well as notes and research. Also included in the series is a bibliography for the book, covers, catalogues and a magazine that advertise the book, and copies of maps that are featured in Reading the River. Series two, Mapping the Farm: The Chronicle of a Family, includes seven manuscripts of Mapping the Farm: The Chronicle of a Family. Three of the manuscripts were returned to Professor Hildebrand from the publishers. An additional three appear to have been edited by his peers. The final manuscript is an unedited proof of the text. Three manuscripts were returned to Hildebrand after publication. The edited versions of the manuscript were returned to Hildebrand after the publication of Mapping the Farm. This returned material, referred to as “foul matter,” is the material that is returned to the author after their book is finished: the edited manuscript and proofs of a book that are superseded by revised or corrected versions of the final printed work. Also included is one uncorrected proof of the manuscript. Series three, The Heart of Things, includes two manuscripts of The Heart of Things: A Midwestern Almanac, and the notes and research regarding the book. The series also includes sample covers, and a Wisconsin Historical Society Catalogue within which the publication is advertised. Series four, The Long Way Round, includes four manuscripts of Long Way Round: Through the Hearland by River, as well as research and notes related to it, much of which was organized by geographical location by Hildebrand. Series five, Articles, includes articles written by Hildebrand, as well as the notes and research that he collected in his writing process. Series six, Awards and Biographical Material, includes awards received by Hildebrand, as well as blurbs regarding his work and articles by and about Hildebrand that do not relate to one of his major publications.

John Hildebrand, professor emeritus of English at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, received a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Michigan in 1971, and a Master of Fines Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Alaska in 1974. In 1977, he joined the English Department at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where he specialized in nonfiction writing and literature, the short story, and American literature.

Hildebrand’s book, Mapping the Farm: The Chronicle of a Family, was published by Alfred A. Knopf in 1995. Mapping the Farm documents a century of American agricultural and rural life. It focuses on William and Catherine O’Neill, an Irish immigrant family who settled on a Rochester, Minnesota, farm in 1880. Their grandson Ed runs the farm today, but none of his children farm full time and the future of the farm is uncertain. The Heart of Things: A Midwestern Almanac was published in 2014 by the Wisconsin Historical Society Press. Hildebrand expounds upon life in Wisconsin using the calendar as the overlying structure. Finally, Long Way Round: Through the Heartland by River was published in 2019 by the University of Wisconsin Press and follows the many rivers of Wisconsin to discover stories.
Hildebrand received the Maxwell Schoenfeld Distinguished Professorship and the Excellence in Scholarship Award during his tenure at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. He was also awarded a Bush Artist Fellowship, a Wisconsin Arts Board Fellowship, the BANTA Award from the Wisconsin Literary Association, and a Friends of American Writers Literary Award.
