This small collection includes newspaper clippings about Graham’s career, correspondence about Graham and by members of his family, and a cemetery plot certificate. The most unique document in the collection is a copy of a letter of endorsement for Graham as postmaster general, signed by 25 Eau Claire citizens.

Biographical/Historical Note

Hiram P. Graham was born in Windham, NY on March 29, 1820. He came to Eau Claire as an employee of the Eau Claire Lumber Company in 1856, and his family joined him shortly thereafter. After four years with the Eau Claire Lumber Company, he bought a planing mill (Graham, White & Company), which eventually evolved into the Phoenix Manufacturing Company. Graham served as president of both the Phoenix Manufacturing Company and the Dells Lumber Company. Graham also held a number of positions in public service. He was appointed county sheriff in 1862, and he served as postmaster general under President Cleveland from 1888 to 1889. He was also a trustee of the village of Eau Claire and was later elected as the first mayor of Eau Claire. He died on January 24, 1902.
