Biographical/Historical Note

The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was the largest Civil War veteran organization. Founded in 1866, the GAR was open to veterans of all ranks who had served in the Union Army. In 1907, daughters of Civil War veterans united in an association to perpetuate the memory of the men who served in the Civil War and to teach the following generation a broader patriotism and knowledge of the principles for which their fathers fought. The first reference to the National Daughters of the GAR in the Eau Claire city directory appeared in 1929.
