Content Description

Cassette tape recording of rebroadcast from WEAU of the Grand Finals of 1953 series of Amateur Talent shows, held at the Eau Claire State Theatre in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. The first 18 minutes of Side A consist of sound checks and a warm-up/exhibition performance by the first prize winner Peter Weinberg, a piano performance of Swanee River. The rest of the recording is the rebroadcast of the talent show. The master of ceremonies was Bob Peterson. There were six finalist acts. Raymond Hackley performed first, a folk singer; Clarance Flagal performed second, an organ player; Jack Walters performed third, a singer; Dick Hob and the Natalie Jazz Band performed fourth (this performance starts at the end of Side A and finishes on Side B of the tape); Alan Nelson performed fifth, a folk singer/yodeler; and Homer Mittelstad and Peter Weinberg performed last, a marimba and piano player. The time for Side A: 31:23; Side B: 15:37. The cassette tape has been digitized.

Biographical/Historical Note

The Grand Finals of 1953 series of Amateur Talent shows was held at the Eau Claire State Theatre in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, and broadcasted by WEAU 13 News. Russell Dairy Company of Eau Claire, Menomonie, and Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, sponsored the talent show. The Master of Ceremonies was Bob Peterson. There were six finalist acts: Peter Weinberg (piano player) and Homer Mittelstad (marimba player) of Eau Claire, Raymond Hackley of Eau Claire (a folk singer), Clarance Flagal of Eau Claire (an organ player), Jack Walters of Radison, Wisconsin (a singer), Dick Hob and the Natalie Jazz Band of Eau Claire, and Alan Nelson of Chippewa Falls (a folk singer/yodeler). First place: Peter Weinberg and Homer Mittelstad. Second place: Dick Hob and the Natalie Jazz Band. Third place: Alan Nelson. Fourth place: Jack Walters.
