Newspaper clippings and a pamphlet regarding the establishment of the Eau Claire State Normal School and the growth and development of the school which became the Eau Claire State Teachers College in 1927. A 1913 pamphlet entitled “WHY the Normal School at Eau Claire Should Be Constructed NOW” outlines the “urgent need” for the school in the Chippewa Valley. Newspaper clippings document the growth and development of the Eau Claire Normal School, which evolved into the Eau Claire State Teachers College in 1927.

Biographical/Historical Note

In 1913, a Citizen’s Committee made up of notable Eau Claire residents Emmet Horan, O. H. Ingram, and J. S. Owen, among others, submitted the proposal to the Wisconsin Legislature to establish the Eau Claire Normal School. The school opened in September 1916 in a single building, Schofield Hall. In 1927, the school was authorized to offer four years of higher education and to grant the degree of bachelor of education. The name was changed from Eau Claire State Normal School to Eau Claire State Teachers College.
