Biographical/Historical Note

The Campus School, first known as the “model school,” was created in 1916 when the Eau Claire State Normal School opened and helped to connect the campus to the community. It was known as the “model school,” then the “training school” and finally the “campus school.” Charles J. Brewer was the first principal of the model school and director of teacher education, and he was succeeded in 1938 by Eugene McPhee, who had been the Principal of the Junior High of the Training School since 1932. The Campus School’s main purpose was to observe the instructional techniques of student teachers before they graduated. It consisted of grades from kindergarten through eighth grade. The school moved into its own building in 1952 on Park Avenue, the Campus School complex including the education building, physical education building (Zorn Arena), campus school, and Kjer Theatre. It included an observation deck for student teachers to observe classes from. The Campus School was closed in June 1973 and the building was leased to the Eau Claire Area School District for use as a public school for training student teachers.
