Biographical/Historical Note

Memorial Hall was the first residence hall on the Eau Claire State Teachers College campus. President Schofield was wanting to expand the campus facilities during the 1930s and became interested in acquiring the large home on the northwest corner of State Street and Garfield Avenue, the Dulany Mansion, because of the recent death of Mary Dulany who was a widow of the lumber baron Daniel Dulany. The home was purchased in 1946 and renovated into a dormitory for sixty-two women that opened in January of 1947. A women’s dormitory was built on lower campus to the west of Old Main and opened in 1955. Memorial Hall then became a male residence hall until a new men’s residence hall was built and opened in 1958 to the west of the women’s dormitory. When Memorial Hall was demolished, some of the stained-glass windows and wood trim were saved to decorate the Dulany Inn restaurant in the UW-Eau Claire Davies Student Center.
