Biographical/Historical Note

Records pertaining to Citizens Against Silica Mining (CASM), a Winona, Minnesota, based group that were concerned with/opposed to frac-sand mining and related operations in southeastern Minnesota and southwestern Wisconsin, including Trempealeau and Buffalo Counties. CASM was started by anti-frac sand mining activist Jim Gurley and his wife. The group was also named Citizens Against Sand Mining, and Winona Area Citizens Concerned About Silica Mining, but changed their name to differentiate between frac sand and sand used in construction and animal bedding. Winona County commissioners passed a frac sand mining ban on all county land in November 2016, with a push from local activism and the Land Stewardship Project.
