Biographical/Historical Note

The National Organization for Women (NOW) was founded in 1966 with notable leader of the women’s rights movement, Betty Friedan, as its first president. NOW was founded with the purpose of using grassroots activism to promote feminist ideals and to fight for equal rights for women. The Eau Claire chapter of NOW was started by UW- Eau Claire English professor Dr. Edna Hood in October 1971. It remained a prominent organization on campus throughout the 1970s and 1980s and sponsored many guest speakers, discussion panels, and presentations related to feminist topics. One notable member of the Eau Claire Chapter was Margo House who helped start the chapter and served as the chapter’s first president as well as serving as the first state president of NOW in Wisconsin. Today NOW still bolsters hundreds of chapters nationwide with hundreds of thousands of members. Wisconsin still maintains two chapters of NOW, one based in Madison and a general statewide chapter.
