Content Description

The William R. Davies Papers consist primarily of published materials documenting his career as a school principal and superintendent. Yearbooks from high schools in Marshfield, Wisconsin, Shawano, Wisconsin, Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, and Superior, Wisconsin comprise the bulk of the collection. The Circular, the newsletter of the Superior Public Schools, documents administrative and professional development activities for teachers in the 1930s. Other materials include newspaper clippings and assorted family papers: Davies’s father’s immigration narrative, his daughter’s baby book, and his wife’s notes from a choral class presumably taught at the Wisconsin State Teachers College (Eau Claire).

Biographical/Historical Note

William R. Davies served as the second president of Eau Claire State Teachers College / Wisconsin State College at Eau Claire from 1940-1959. Davies was born in 1893 in Tenino, Washington. His family migrated to Cambria, Wisconsin, when he was four years old. He graduated Ripon College with a bachelor’s degree in 1915 and the University of Wisconsin with a master’s degree in 1921. He taught briefly at a private school in Endeavor, Wisconsin, but left that position to serve in World War I. When he returned to the United States, he accepted a position as principal of McKinley Senior High School in Marshfield, Wisconsin. In 1925, he was elected school superintendent of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, and in 1930, he was elected school superintendent of Superior, Wisconsin.

William R. Davies passed away December 10, 1959.
