Biographical/Historical Note

The American Association of University Women was founded in 1881, to encourage women’s career advancement and pursuit of higher education. Ms. Marion Fleming, a graduate of the University of Wisconsin (Madison, Wis.) and resident of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, established the Chippewa Valley Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). The branch’s organizational meeting was held on April 28, 1923, in the City Hall auditorium. Seventeen women attended, each possessing either a B.A. degree or more than one year of college or university education. Although the current Eau Claire Branch of the AAUW was chartered in 1959, this group seems to have been an important precursor.

The branch sought to improve education and cultivate civic responsibility. During its first year, there were ten meetings in which lecturers spoke about educational and political issues.
