Biographical/Historical Note
Citizens for Environmental Stewardship (CES) was a citizen organized environmental activism group whose mission was to conserve and protect natural resources from the onslaught of issues that CES believed frac sand mining presented. They sought to help put an end to the mining through collecting of research, cultivating educational events, and hosting monthly meetings to encourage group activism. CES focused its efforts as a group on a plant called the Hi-Crush plant in Augusta, Wisconsin. The group was concerned with the railroad traffic delays and possible fugitive dust release the plant was causing and would frequent the geographical area around the plant to take photos and document evidence. The group was primarily active between 2011 and 2016 when they would frequently host events with speakers who were experts within the fields of sand mining.
CES was focused on leaving a legacy behind that would assure future generations would get to enjoy the beautiful landscape of rural Wisconsin. The organization encouraged its members and interested citizens to become involved in a greater fight to enjoy, conserve, and improve natural resources not only in Northern Wisconsin but worldwide. Sand plants started waning in 2017 and CES had met the goal the organization had set for itself in helping the environment long term and bringing attention to issues the group cared deeply about.
