Biographical/Historical Note

The first formal student organization for gay and lesbian students attending the University of Wisconsin--Eau Claire was GLOBE (Gay Lesbian or Bisexual Equality). Founded in 1984, GLOBE aimed to educate non-gays about homosexuality, provide social support to gay, lesbian, and bisexuals at UWEC, and work to end violence and discrimination against homosexuals. GLOBE welcomed homosexuals, bisexuals, and heterosexuals who supported their mission. In 1993 GLOBE won the UWEC Student Organization Award in recognition of its achievements. In the late 1990s or early 2000s, GLOBE changed its name to GLBT-SA (Gay Lesbian Bisexual, Transsexual Student Alliance). By 2006, the organization was named Spectrum.
