Content Description

The collection consists of various records – meeting minutes, agendas, grant applications, and correspondence – from several Hmong social service agencies, including the Eau Claire Hmong Mutual Assistance Association, the Indochinese Refugee Committee, and the St. Olaf Refugee Committee. Fragmentary records of VTAE District One vocational and technical courses for Hmong refugees contain curricular and limited student information. The collection also includes information on Hmong demographics in Wisconsin and newspaper clippings about the Eau Claire area Hmong population.

Biographical/Historical Note

Jack O’Connell, an Eau Claire area resident and English as a second language instructor at the Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, was an active participant in several Eau Claire organizations that served the Hmong immigrant community and appears to have been integral to the development of Hmong-oriented vocational and technical education in the Vocational, Technical, and Adult Education District One.
